Before you design a single pixel, get painfully clear on what the user is trying to accomplish and what is currently in their way. Most UX problems are really clarity problems in disguise.

Every element on a page competes for attention. The fastest way to improve most interfaces is to delete what does not serve the primary task, not to polish what does.
